Cross Mountain - Marks Place of Peace - On a high mountain peak overlooking Pinos Altos is a tall white cross that keeps solitary vigil in the same spot Santiago Brito placed the first - a big wooden cross - as a sign of peace between settlers and the nearby Apaches. It is believed that this first cross was covered with tin so the sun and moonlight would keep it always visible.
Pinos Altos Historical Museum - circa 1860s - Housed in a log cabin that once served as the 1st school house in Grant County, the museum houses a great collection of mining artifacts and historic memorabilia. - Gift Shop. Phone: 505-388-1882.
Catholic Church and Cemetery - circa 1888 - Located on Highway 15, the land for the church and cemetery was donated by Frank Bell in 1888. Catholics are buried near the little church where they once came together to worship with the priest who road horse-back over the mountains to reach the town once each month.
Pinos Altos Community Cemetery - dates from the beginning of settlers in the area and is itself a history of Pinos Altos. Although it is located along side of the Catholic Cemetery, it predates the Catholic Church and Cemetery by 30 years and has grave markers dating back to 1861, when the miners fought the Apaches on Main Street.
Grant County Court House - circa 1871 - Although only one term of court was held in the 1st court house in Grant County, it has been described as "the gayest and loudest ever held in the Rocky Mountains". Grant County was formed from Dona Ana in 1868 and Pinos Altos was the county seat from 1869 - 1871.
Hearst Methodist Church (circa 1898) was built by the Hearst family of newspaper fame and serves as home to the Grant County Art Guild. The museum features a number of conveyances such as a glass-sided hearse which carried the body of Pat Garrett. The gold used in decorating the Hearst Castle in California came from the Hearst Mine in Pinos Altos.
Pinos Altos Fire House was built to fit in with the charm of this 1860s village and is home to our Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Although not a historic building, the fire house is one of the most photographed buildings in town.
McDonald Log Cabin - circa 1850 - The little log cabin was built by a young Indian fighter from Ireland named John McDonald. His descendants still own the property and it is said to be the oldest building in the County.
Pinos Altos Ice Cream Parlor - circa 1860s - This adobe structure was originally the "Norton Store". The building also serves as the local Post Office and is decorated with many fine pieces of memorabilia, including old mail boxes.
Pinos Altos Opera House - Showcases excellent displays of prehistoric Indian artifacts, Mimbres pottery, pictures of Apache chiefs, and weathered wood relics of the old west. - Enter after 3:00 PM thru the Buckhorn Saloon, except Sundays. Live plays by the Pinos Altos Melodrama Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings.
