The Pinos Altos Historical Museum is housed in a log cabin (circa 1860s) that has been in the Schafer family for over 130 years. More detailed historic information about the log cabin and family can be found at Schafer Log Cabin.
The log cabin at one time served as the 1st school house in Grant County.
A great collection of 19th Century Americana, including old maps and photographs of the area, period furniture and artifacts, mining tools, and weathered wood relics of the old west are on display.
Native American photographs - and photos and "Wanted" posters of Outlaws such as Billy the Kid - are also on display.
Prints and postcards can be purchased in the adjacent gift shop.
Also for sale in the gift shop are Mata Ortiz pottery, Native American jewelry, gold-panning supplies, local rocks and minerals, and many other interesting finds.
The Pinos Altos Historical Museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For additional information call 505-388-1882
