Now in its 11th season, the current offering at the Pinos Altos Melodrama Theatre is "The Legend of Billy the Kid or...It's Just a Little Gun Play." This original rendition of Billy the Kid's life is written and directed by Sean O'Hare. As with all of O'Hare's other works, this hysterical production is filled with fast-paced slapstick humor and plenty of opportunity for the audience to participate as they are encouraged to boo the villainous gunslingers, cheer the hero and throw popcorn to their heart's delight.
The evening's entertainment opens with an old-fashioned sing-along as audience members call out the number of their favorite song. This cabaret-style theatre is housed in the historic Opera House in the quaint mountain town of Pinos Altos. Located in the foothills of the Gila National Forest, this area is filled with controversial stories of Billy the Kid. This hysterically accurate depiction of the life and times of the notorious outlaw includes all of the legendary characters, such as Pat Garrett, Johnny Reno and Billie Barlow.

The area has become a popular get-away from the sweltering heat of El Paso, Las Cruces, Tucson, and Phoenix. Followers of Billy the Kid include Silver City and Pinos Altos on their roster of places to visit along the Billy the Kid Trail. Clubs and tour groups have found Pinos Altos to be the perfect place for a weekend of relaxation and old-fashioned entertainment. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for children under 12, with special rates available for parties of 50 or more.
Theatre goers can begin their evening with dinner at the Buckhorn Saloon and Restaurant located adjacent to the Opera House. Full bar service is available before and during the show, with late evening entertainment continuing in the Buckhorn Saloon. Area lodging includes motels, mountain cabins, scenic campgrounds and RV Parks. Visit Historic Pinos Altos, NM for details about the many things to see and do when you come to the melodrama.
