Schafer log cabin
Not many log cabins have survived since the 1860's when they were built by miners who came to search for gold on the mountain. Apaches liked to set fire to them, kerosene lamps were accidentally turned over, and fireplaces spit out burning pieces of wood. Bear Creek and a few wells provided the only water supply - so once a fire started, there was only a slim chance of saving a log cabin.  read more
Pinos Altos Volunteer Fire House
Pinos Altos Fire House was built to fit in with the charm of this 1860s village and is home to our Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.  read more
Pinos Altos Orchards and Gift Shop
Located on the site of the old Clark and Massingil orchards at 13 Placer St. The shop features a unique collection of work from local artists as well as homemade jams, jellies and imports.  read more
Pinos Altos Museum
The Pinos Altos Historical Museum is housed in a log cabin (circa 1860s) that has been in the Schafer family for over 130 years. The log cabin at one time served as the first school house in Grant County.  read more
McDonald Log Cabin
The little log cabin was built by a young Indian fighter from Ireland named John McDonald. His descendants still own the property and it is said to be the oldest building in the County.  read more
Hearst Methodist Church
The Hearst Methodist Church (circa 1898) was built by the Hearst family of newspaper fame and serves as home to the Grant County Art Guild. The museum features a number of conveyances such as a glass-sided hearse which carried the body of Pat Garrett.  read more
Gila Cliff Dwellings

Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is located in the Gila Wilderness within the Gila National Forest. Within a few miles of the Cliff Dwellings, elevations range from around 5,700 to 7,300 feet above sea level. In the immediate vicinity of the Cliff Dwellings, elevations range from 5,700 to about 6,000 feet.  read more
First Grant County Court House
Although only one term of court was held in the 1st court house in Grant County, it has been described as "the gayest and loudest ever held in the Rocky Mountains". Grant County was formed from Dona Ana in 1868 and Pinos Altos was the county seat from 1869 - 1871.  read more
Fifth Annual Mimbres Valley Harvest Festival

As the growing season continues, residents of the Mimbres Valley will be coming together to celebrate their life in the valley, inviting everyone to their Fifth Annual Mimbres Valley Harvest Festival, Saturday, September 25th, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  read more
Cross Mountain
Cross Mountain does not appear on most maps, and tourists driving the narrow road that winds through the old mining town of Pinos Altos rarely look up. But even when no one sees it, a tall white cross on this high mountain peak keeps solitary vigil in the same spot Santiago Brito placed the first - a big wooden cross - as a sign of peace between settlers and the nearby Apaches.  read more
Continental Divide Trail

Pinos Altos sits astride the Canada-to-Mexico Continental Divide Trail. The trail passes near town and makes for great hiking, even if Canada isn't your destination.   read more
City of Rocks State Park
Formed of volcanic ash welded together 35 million years ago, then sculpted by wind and water into rows of monolithic blocks, the incredible rock formations of the City of Rocks are an amazing spectacle.  read more
